Born and battered in the five boroughs, NYC’s own Underbites are back in the ring with Out of Control — twelve punchy, hook-loaded shots of pure rock’n’roll adrenaline. Think Ramones heart with a punk brain, all swagger, wit, and grit intact. These guys might’ve grown up on power chords and pizza slices, but their songs crackle with a veteran’s craft and a working-class conscience.
 

Formed just before the world hit pause for Covid, The Underbites came screaming out of lockdown with Persons of Interest, a DIY debut EP that reminded us what loud guitars and smart words can do for a city on life support. Then came 2022’s Sort It Out and 2024’s Soapbox Agitprop, each a little sharper, louder, more nuanced — proof that you can rage and reason at the same time.
 

Out of Control raises the stakes. Guitarist-singer Jon Fox, axe partner Kurt Feldhun, bassist Ethan Rosenblatt, and drummer Mike Hoffman tighten every bolt and sharpen every hook. It’s brainy but brawny: the sort of record that references Puccini and Prince between riffs that could rattle CBGB’s ghost.
 

The album opens with “The Ruling Class,” a snarling takedown of American inequality, then careens into “Guantanamo,” a diatribe that hits like early Naked Raygun and “Panic Button,” both wired with the chaos of our modern mess. Politics and paranoia rub elbows with raw joy — “American Election Day” stares down democracy’s wobble, while “Stay Away From The Cops” keeps the humor dark and the tempo fast.

 

“You’re Not The Boss of Me” flips its TV-ready title into a defiant shout-along, and “Latex Novelties” flirts with the Buzzcocks’ knack for melody and mischief before “Non-Stop Bop” drops the curtain with a wink to the Ramones and the rock’n’roll roots that made them.

 

Punk’s not dead, but in The Underbites’ hands, it’s got a wicked sense of humor, a political backbone, and a killer backbeat — alive, loud, and, yeah, a little out of control.
